I guess I can't stay away from this canyon. It's about an hour from my home, but worth the drive. I painted this at around 7PM, and it was still hot...eighty five degrees. The sun was beginning to set, and that made the shadows darker which created more contrast.

my e-mailIt was a hot day today....93 degrees in the sun. It was also pretty windy at times. However, the sunlight flooding the canyon was truly dramatic, and the sky was intensely blue. The location I painted in is called Box Canyon in Socorro County New Mexico.

The challenge here was to capture all the colors of the prairie just before sunset. The light on the landscape begins to change dramatically just as the sun begins to set, but  the sky is still mostly pale blue.A few days ago, I painted a loose, but colorful version of this which took me less than 30 minutes to complete. Although the sun was in it's earliest stages of setting, the prairie and brush were alive with cool blues and warm reds and orange. 
This is what I would call pure impressionism. It is a "wash"  done in oils, and was done in about 30 minutes. The sun rose behind Davenport Mountain at 8:00 AM. By 8:45 AM, I was outside painting the light falling on a meadow that had a tent parked in it. The light became more and more intense as the morning progressed. I finished painting this at about 10:AM.

The  trees at the edge of the forest seemed to be marching in the snow. While living  here in the mountains of the Cibola National Forest, one begins to see things  differently...especially when it snows frequently, leaving a three foot base of  the white stuff. The world here gets very  bright.

The mountain forest is enchanting. I couldn't resist working this so as to have it appear as though there is a doorway in the woods. There was actually a slight reddish glow at the foot of the wooded area, and I highlighted that ( artistic license!).

December in the Cibola National Forest, New Mexico and it is definitely winter. While growing up in the city, I didn't get to see a lot of clean, white snow. I suppose I am making up for it now...the light and shadow after a fresh snowfall are just amazing.

 There is drama in the light and shadows of the forest. As the sun begins to set on an icy cold day, it darkens the trees and brightens the snow. The studio is right at the foot of the mountains of the Cibola Nationsl Forest in New Mexico and my paintings directly and spontaneously communicate the experience of being there.

It is common to have an early snowfall in the mountains of New Mexico. This one stayed around for 5 days. Here it is early morning before there are footprints of man or beast. Fresh snow has the quality of soft shadows which create wonderful shadows. In the forest, the small window of dusk allows a special enchantment and the fading daylight displays colors that one wouldn't ordinarily see. I followed a dirt road off the main hwy, passed a "no tresspassing" sign, and came upon this friendly Autumn scene. I was really inspired to paint this...the morning sunlight streaming through the Aspens on the left, while displaying the late summer colors along the path and up the hill.

To a landscape painter the terrain here is a paradise. Mojave Academy lies tucked in a valley in the middle of Cibola National Forest, New Mexico. Along the mountain slopes protecting the valley are Ponderosa Pines, Cedar, Oak &amp; Pinion pines. Mind &amp; Spirit feel the desire to wander here on the high desert plains of New Mexico. Some of us are invited by the rolling rythm of the hills, while others are inspired by the space that is opened up through the sky and clouds. I gave the clouds &amp; and sky to Cheri. 

While it may appear detailed to some degree, this painting is an impression. I am fascinated with this stuff that is called "rabbit brush". Each bush grows to about three feet in diameter by September. What inspired me to paint this was the thick gathering of moss on this natural monolith. The greens and red-browns of the terrain present a harmony that is unique to the Western United States.

A painting of a prairie in Socorro County, New Mexico. Socorro got its name in 1598 from explorer Juan de Onate, whose tired and hungry men were given food and shelter by the Piro Indians. "socorro" means "help", or "succor" in Spanish.

The surrounding area has a colorful history, recalling such notorious characters as Belle Starr and the James-Younger gang. It was originally home to the Creek Indian Nation.

The first documented discovery of gold in the Rocky Mountain Region was by Lewis Ralston in 1850. Ralston Creek is now a popular trail for hiking, jogging and bicycling. This was painted after a morning of shooting photos on a wintry Colorado day. It is 8"x10" oil on canvas in an ornate silver frame.
